Every Monday (Didactic + simulation and hands-on training) for 12 weeks quarterly.

Prerequisites

A medical doctor in good standing with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of CanadaRN or LPN with a letter of intent and reference from Medical Director (MD).

Curriculum

Week 1

The Anatomy of the Face

When embarking in the field of Medical Aesthetics, the most important preliminary step is to get well acquainted with facial anatomy.

In this course you will:

  • Learn how to evaluate facial symmetries
  • Learn how to prepare and mark the face prior to performing any injectable procedure
  • Learn to quickly and precisely identify anatomical landmarks.
  • Learn to identify the dangerous areas in the face.
  • Learn about the anatomical evolution of the facial structures with aging.
  • Identify the sensory distribution of the facial nerves.
  • Participate in a real time patient simulation.

Testing on anatomical landmarks prior to proceeding to week 2.

Week 2

Toxin for Aesthetics

We often hear of people referring to Neurotoxins by their trade/ product names, but what is a neurotoxin? In this course, you will be given an in-depth introduction to neurotoxins.

In this course you will:

  • Learn what is a neurotoxin and why it is being used for facial aesthetics
  • Learn about all the varying neurotoxins available in the current aesthetic market (both nationally and internationally)
  • Define an “on label” aesthetic indications for the use of a neurotoxin
  • Learn the outcomes that can be expected from the use of a Neurotoxin
  • Identify the risks of neurotoxin procedures and how can they be avoided
  • Dosing and preparation of toxin
  • Familiarize with appropriate storage of neurotoxin
  • Familiarize with the treatment of the “Glabellar“ region
  • Learn how to evaluate and treat “crows feet”
  • Learn techniques in injecting the forehead region

Week 3

Medical Uses of Toxin

Did you know that Neurotoxin was first used for medical indications? Now that you know all about the aesthetic uses of a neurotoxin, we will delve into all the life-altering medical indications for neurotoxin.

In this course you will:

  • Learn which neurotoxins are now indicated for medical uses
  • Identify some “on–label” medical indications
  • Evaluate appropriateness for medical therapy with neurotoxin
  • Receive an introduction to hyperhidrosis
  • Familiarize with anatomical landmarks used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis
  • Learn the expected outcomes from the treatment of hyperhidrosis
  • Learn the risks associated with the treatment of hyperhidrosis
  • Be introduced to Migraine therapy
  • Familiarize with anatomical landmarks used in the treatment of migraine headaches
  • Identify those who qualify for migraine therapy with neurotoxin
  • Learn proper injection techniques for migraines

Week 4

Introduction to Dermal Filler Uses

What is dermal filler? Often people have a poor understanding of what they need in order to achieve their desired outcomes. They might say to you “I want botox in my lips” when in fact what they are looking for is a result only achieved with the use of dermal fillers.

In this course you will:

  • Learn to effectively understand how to provide the best outcomes to your patients with the use of dermal fillers
  • Learn about dermal fillers and what they are used for
  • Learn about the essential components of a dermal filler
  • Familiarize with some of the pharmaceutical filler products
  • Meet some of the pharmaceutical representatives
  • Learn some of the key differences with some of the dermal fillers
  • Learn about the various injection techniques
  • Discuss the barriers to achieving optimal dermal filler outcomes
  • Identify the risks associated with the injection of dermal fillers

Week 5

Introduction to the MD Codes

Dr. Mauricio de Maio is a world-respected plastic surgeon who has created a new language in facial aesthetics. Like many other medical entities, medical aesthetics not only requires a clear knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and pathophysiology but also technique and protocol to achieve safe and optimal results. He has developed the MD codes and in my experience, this has changed the way we practice aesthetic medicine.

In this course you will:

  • Understand why the MD codes assist in achieving optimal outcomes
  • Learn about the application of the MD codes
  • Begin using the MD codes to identify treatment plans
  • Participate In a live patient simulation workshop using the MD Codes to guide therapy

Week 6

The Cheeks

The cheek has a paramount role in guiding the perception of ones face and the emotional attributes behind it. When we have deflated cheeks, we may look ill and dehydrated. When we have heavy cheeks we begin to look saggy and inflated. Over time the cheeks evolve in shape, hydration, volume, and dimension. The cheeks in most cases are certainly the first step in addressing whole facial rejuvenation.

In this segment you will learn:

  • The anatomy of the cheek
  • To identify the impact of the different compartments of the cheek on the overall face
  • The pathology behind an aging cheek
  • Injection techniques
  • How to chose an appropriate dermal filler

Week 7

The Chin

The chin is often overlooked by many patients as well as medical practitioners. The impact a chin could have on the overall face is large. Our facial bones and dental structures largely affect how our chin will look. As with all other aesthetics, there is a necessary dimension of the different parts of the face that needs to be well understood in order to achieve optimal outcomes.

In this course you will learn:

  • The anatomy of the chin
  • How to achieve the most visually appealing chin
  • Different techniques of injecting the chin and surrounding structures
  • Potential risks associated with injecting the chin
  • How to choose the most ideal product to inject the chin

Week 8

The Lips

The lips are by far one of the most controversial topics in facial aesthetics. Lips are a beautiful and complex structure and often give the fastest gratification to the patient when treated correctly. Although lips can be the most satisfying, they are also the most criticized. In addition to there aesthetic potential, there comes a big risk of adverse medical and aesthetic outcomes which occur far too commonly.

In this course you will learn:

  • The anatomy of the lips
  • The pathology of an aging lip
  • Various injection techniques
  • The appropriate volume to be injected in the lips
  • Choosing the perfect product to inject the lips

Week 9

The Eyes

The process of aging starts around our eyes. There are changes in the orbital bones and structures over time. Our eyelids can either show or conceal our eyes. Our brows can offer an attractive framework for our eyes. Over time, there can be hollows causing inconsistencies and discoloration around our eyes. Achieving a certain level of proficiency in treating the eyes is a necessary step to achieving optimal and natural aesthetic outcomes.

In this course you will learn:

  • The orbital anatomy
  • The different eye shapes and how to individually address them
  • How to chose the appropriate patient for injection near the eyes
  • How to safely inject around the orbit
  • How to chose an appropriate product to treat the eyes

Week 10

The Consultation

Although knowledge is indeed power, you will now learn how to best apply that knowledge and create a safe environment for your patients. A well-informed patient is crucial to have before embarking on any aesthetic procedures. You will notice that there are many misconceptions, fears, and anxieties that patients have that ultimately guide their decisions on having an aesthetic procedure.

In this course you will learn:

  • How to speak to patients with an array of different personalities
  • How to best inform your patients
  • How to avoid potentially toxic situations
  • How to create a curiosity within your community of patients
  • How to change the culture of medical aesthetics
  • How to confidently guarantee “best” outcomes in your practice

Week 11

The Business of Medical Aesthetics

Now that you have evaluated your patient and informed them of the appropriate course one action, you must begin developing a plan and begin acting. Although we are practitioners because of our love of this profession, our success determines our personal satisfaction and the satisfaction of those we treat.

In this course you will:

  • Begin having a basic understanding of the necessary business concept behind medical aesthetics
  • Understand some of the costs and risks associated with establishing your aesthetic business
  • Be given individualized guidance and business planning
  • Learn about some common business obstacles and solutions
  • Learn about establishing a team within your business
  • Learn about appropriate delegation of tasks
  • Learn how to avoid burnout and undue stress in establishing a new business

Week 12

Complications

As with any surgical procedure, complications will undoubtedly occur. Our rate of complications is ultimately what will drive a lot of our business over the long term and in the short term, will help us achieve satisfaction and confidence in our work.

In this course you will:

  • Review the anatomy of the face with a special focus on areas to exercise caution with
  • Discuss common complications with toxins and how to address them
  • Discuss rare complication of toxin injections and how to proceed when encountered
  • Discuss common dermal filler complications
  • Discuss proven as well as experimental methods to manage some of the adverse outcomes
  • Discuss appropriate follow-up and future planning after complications

Final Testing and Certification

At the end of the 12-week certification, you will be required to complete:

  • A live patient simulation and procedure planning
  • An online exam with a required minimum score of 80%

Once completed, you will:

  • Be provided a Certificate of Completion of the SOMA Advanced Aesthetic Certification
  • Become a certified practitioner  of the first certification course in North America
  • Be ready to confidently provide the best outcomes in your medical aesthetic practice
